Nordic Youth Media Lab: Critical Thinking & Digital Democracy
What this project is
The Nordic Youth Media Lab is a cross‑Nordic initiative designed to strengthen young people’s ability to navigate today’s complex and rapidly changing information environment. It empowers youth aged 16–30 to understand how media shapes public opinion, democracy, and social cohesion — and to become active contributors to truthful, inclusive, and responsible digital communication.
The project responds to the growing challenges of misinformation, propaganda, emotional manipulation, and declining trust in institutions. Instead of treating young people as passive consumers of information, the initiative positions them as creators, analysts, and leaders. Through skills workshops, digital labs, and the Nordic Media Festival, participants learn to identify bias, verify information, understand media influence, and produce ethical content that reflects diverse voices.
A Youth Steering Group of ten representatives guides the curriculum, communication strategy, and evaluation. Participants co‑create podcasts, videos, campaigns, and a Nordic Youth Media Manifesto. The project integrates mental wellbeing, ethical journalism, and AI awareness, ensuring that young people gain not only technical skills but also emotional resilience and civic confidence.
By combining hybrid learning, digital collaboration, and local implementation, the project maintains a low ecological footprint while ensuring accessibility across regions. The long‑term vision is to establish a sustainable Nordic Youth Media Network that continues cooperation, mentoring, and content creation beyond the project period.
Target group
The project targets young people aged 16–30 from Finland, Sweden, Denmark, and Estonia. It is intentionally designed to be inclusive and accessible, ensuring participation from youth who often face barriers to civic engagement, media representation, and digital participation.
Who we work with
- Youth from minority backgrounds: participants from migrant communities, linguistic minorities, and culturally diverse groups who are often underrepresented in media and public dialogue.
- Youth with fewer opportunities: young people facing social, economic, or geographic barriers — including rural youth, low‑income families, and those with limited access to digital tools or educational opportunities.
- Youth with special needs or disabilities: accessible formats, hybrid participation options, and supportive facilitation ensure full inclusion.
- Young creators, activists, and emerging media professionals: those interested in journalism, digital storytelling, civic participation, or social impact — seeking skills, networks, and professional guidance.
- General youth population aged 16–30: motivated young people who may not yet have experience in media or activism but want to learn, collaborate, and contribute to democratic dialogue.
The project ensures gender balance, intersectional inclusion, and representation across regions. All activities are beginner‑friendly, with no prior media experience required.
