Gender equality is essential for creating fair and just societies. When girls and boys have equal rights and opportunities, everyone benefits. However, disparities often emerge during adolescence. Girls face discriminatory practices, child marriage risks, and gender-based violence. Adolescent girls are more likely to experience sexual violence and complications from pregnancy. Learning inequalities persist, with fewer girls globally in education, employment, or training by late adolescence.
Gender equality in Finland
Training for gender equality is a transformative process that aims to provide knowledge, techniques and tools to develop skills and changes in attitudes and behaviours. It is a continuous and long-term process that requires political will and commitment of all parties in order to create inclusive societies that recognize the need to promote gender equality.
Violence and harassment
Women and men are subjected to an almost identical amount of violence in Finland. However, there are gender differences in experiences of violence. Belonging to a gender minority increases the risk of violence. Women are subjected to violence particularly in relationships, within families, and at workplaces. Sexual violence most often affects women and girls. On the other hand, overall men encounter violence more often than women in public places, and the perpetrator is usually another man.
Climate Action and Gender Equality
Training for gender equality as one of the most important strategies we have to advance gender-responsive climate action. It explores why training for gender equality matters for climate action, practical ways in which experts have used such training to support climate adaptation and mitigation in the past, and recommendations for the future.
